The Air Force is pushing to modernize flight scheduling tools. As part of this push, Fearless is building on an MVP Air Force scheduling application with a team out of Hanscom Air Force Base, with Kessel Run in Massachusetts.

Fearless Scrum master Kendra McCarthy is leading her Fearless team, partnered with Clarity Innovations. We're developing 3 new flight scheduling tools within the Flight Scheduling application, known as Aviato.

“We’re looking to modernize the whole long-range flight planning operation,” McCarthy said. “For example, long-range scheduling has never been in a modernized or automated tool. It has been all spreadsheets.”

Wing C2 Tech Lead, Bill Torson says Aviato brings operation and maintenance schedules into the same system for the first time in Air Force history.

“We have seen as much as a 70% reduction in the time it takes to create a weekly schedule,” he said. “And we’re finally collecting all of this data in a single place and creating an auditable mission thread. We can then use these to drive machine learning algorithms in the future.”

3 new key features of Aviato:

Crew Scheduling:

  • Crew scheduling options for day, week, and two-week views
  • Ability to drag and drop crew in a puckboard-like interface for easier scheduling
  • Future updates will include adding specific crew members' qualifications and certifications to better schedule crew positions for flights.
  • Value: Squadron schedulers can quickly place crew in a sortie based off of their commitments, and crew positions.

Long-range schedule:

  • Operations & Maintenance schedulers are able for the first time to work in the same applications
  • Operations schedulers input operational requirements for missions and events
  • Maintenance schedulers can then align military aircraft to the planned missions
  • Planned updates and added features include a direct API integration with the Kronos application to better allocate military aircraft for missions.
  • Value: By identifying the needs of the operations schedulers and the mission requirements, maintenance schedulers can better keep up with the needs and ensure planes are available when needed

Short-range schedule:

  • Relevant information needed for a flight is built out in the short-range scheduler.
  • Value: The interface allows schedulers to collect and organize the data and best prepare for the flight day
