The Centers for Medicaid and Medicaid Services (CMS) serves more than 100 million Americans. But as the pandemic shuttered its offices, the public has turned to its online services at CMS.gov more than ever.

What we did for CMS.

Digital Service Coalition members CivicActions and Fearless are proud to partner with CMS to improve dozens of its legacy online applications during this critical time.

A key challenge in this work was that many users found the online interfaces hard to use. Or they felt they lacked the information they wanted.

“This pandemic has underscored just how much the public depends on digital services to stay connected with its government — especially when it comes to healthcare services,” said CivicActions Director of Agile Services Alaine Karoleff. “Our team has kept that in focus, and approached our work with customer-centric empathy.”

The updated applications began launching in the fall and will continue to roll out through the end of 2021.

Updated applications include:

  • License Agreements,
  • Acronyms and Glossary,
  • Eligibility Premium Calendar,
  • CMS Contacts,
  • Medicare Helpful Contacts
  • Medicare Loss Ratio
  • Publications Ordering
  • ACO/Accountable Care Organizations
  • Physician Fee Schedule

“There is a large population of people relying on the CMS website for information,” said Fearless Portfolio Director, Nichole Weems. “Not only Medicare users but also the people who perform and give care. There is an enormous population of people who need to use these sites. Our work is helping all US citizens, doctors, and providers who interact with CMS and the agency itself to help support more people during a pandemic.”

CivicActions and Fearless implemented the CMS design system with the new applications. Using their design system allowed for more reusable components to be incorporated into the applications and made future changes easier to execute.
